Season 8 » Episode #02 - Reborn To Be Wild - First Aired: Nov. 09, 2003

Summary: Bobby starts to hang out with a Christian Rock group. Hank is okay with it, but reconsiders when Bobby's attitude changes. 

Context:  First, note the aired date and try to remember (however painful) the scourge of christian "rock" bands that were hijacking the airwaves - weirdest and most uncomfortable rock trend ever, particularly when aligned with "new metal" (the second worse).  

Hank confronts Pastor K (covered in christian skin-art, long black hair, black/triangle soul patch, leather pants, and wailing god-praise from behind a screeching guitar) when he becomes a negative influence on Bobby and delivers this brilliant line:

"Can't you see you're not making christianity better, you're just making rock n roll worse."  - Hank Hill

I Laughed furiously upon hearing this for the first time recently, and highly encourage all christian rock bands to take note - great wisdom lies here.  And, I get the feeling that this is one of those pieces of dialogue that is directly from the mind of Mike Judge.  

Mike Judge has long had my full respect, since the earliest days of Beavis and Butt-Head and on through King of the Hill and his feature films.  However, upon moving to Austin TX, somehow King of the Hill has become twice as funny and satirically relevant.  Now I know why those Whataburger signs in the background are so hilarious. Oh yeah, Mike Judge is from Austin and the show is about as Texas suburbia perfect as it gets.

Never interfere in a boy and girl fight.

Beware of whores who say they don't want money. The hell they don't. What they mean is they want more money. Much more.

Do not offer sympathy to the mentally ill. Tell them firmly, "I am not paid to listen to this drivel. You are a terminal fool."

Now some of you may encounter the devil's bargain if you get that far. Any old soul is worth saving at least to a priest, but not every soul is worth buying. So you can take the offer as a compliment. They charge the easy ones first, you know, like money, all the money there is. But who wants to be the richest guy in some cemetery? Not much to spend it on, eh, Gramps? Getting too old to cut the mustard. Have you forgotten something, Gramps? In order to feel something, you have to be there. You have to be 18. You're not 18, you are 78. Old fool sold his soul for a strap-on.

How about an honorable bargain? "You always wanted to become a doctor. Now's your chance. Why, you could have become a great healer and benefit humanity. What's wrong with that?" Just about everything. There are no honorable bargains involving exchange of qualitative merchandise like souls. Just quantitative merchandise like time and money. So piss off, Satan, and don't take me for dumber than I look.

Outside of being one of the more interesting characters to emerge from the bohemian sublayers of 70's/80's NY scene, and that is saying quite a bit in itself, he has managed to become one of the true renaissance men of underground/indy pop culture - an intriguing existence indeed, good and bad. He had a shared musical project with Jean Michel Basquiat and was part of Warhols inner circle - what else need be said. On the other side, arguably aware or not, he has become renowned for comments that express less than scrupulous social perspectives, often provoking criticism for the seemingly tactless ignorance and anarchist flare. He has also left a bold signature on the world of cinema as a filmmaker and an actor, undeniably, regardless of a somewhat contentious and often incredulous reception (aka. Brown Bunny). However, let us not forget Buffalo '66, one of my favorite cinematic love stories of all time. He has been accused of being a provocateur (well, he has been accused of a lot less flattering things, and always manages to ignite it into fuel). I would argue that, IF this is a valid accusation, it is rooted in a basic artistic premise that is honest and intrinsic to Gallo's life experience - hence justified - as if he needs any F'n justification!

Gallo was recently awarded the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at the 67th Venice Film Festival, for his performance in Jerzy Skolimowski's film, Essential Killing.

He also has a new film, written and directed by, as well as acted in, Promises Written in Water, that debuted at Venice and Toronto. Admittedly, I have not read much on it, but am intrigued by the concept and, of course, Gallo as an auteur.

A twisted mutation of Palahniuk's dark-nook, back-alley, gritty realism (surreal at the same time - yes, this does make sense) and fantastical, philosophical, sci fi thriller - with the underlying combative themes of social chaos and romantic purpose that seem to thread all of Palahniuk's books.
